Ques 14. What is pollution ? Explain the types of pollution.

Answer - Pollution is the addition of any substance to the environment in excess to what is normally present, thereby, making the environment impure.

Types of pollution are:

1. Air pollution: In the process of combustion, smoke emitted from burning of domestic fuel, burning of coal in thermal power stations, smoke emitted from automobiles, bursting of firecrackers, smoke emitted from factories, smoke emitted from spraying of pesticides and insecticides. All these cause air pollution.

So much smoke comes out from all these sources that it becomes difficult to breathe. Smoke also affects our eyes and causes blindness. This is what causes air pollution.

2. Water pollution: Sources of water get polluted when they are used for bathing animals, washing clothes and washing self after defecation , Oil tankers spread oil over large areas of the ocean. Very often garbage is also disposed of in this source of water. All these cause water pollution.

3. Soil pollution: Soil becomes polluted when wastes from factories in the form of chemicals and metals are not disposed off properly. Some chemicals can make the soil totally infertile. If insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers are added in excess, then they penetrate into the plants or fruits and vegetables growing near by. These chemicals then enter our digestive system and make us sick.

4. Noise pollution: unwanted or disturbing sound in the environment that affects the health and well-being of humans and other living organisms its called noise pollution. These sounds put pressure on the nerves and cause headaches. This gradually affects the hearing power.
