Q. 1 (i) – “Culture has materialistic and spiritual aspects” Justify.
Answer– The materialistic aspects of culture are reflected in the scientific urban planning,
mathematics, measurement, and trade development of the Harappan civilization. On the
other hand, the spiritual aspects are manifested in Indian philosophy, religion, and
spiritual thoughts, such as Jainism and Buddhism. Indian culture is a confluence of both
material and spiritual elements, making it balanced and rich.

Q. 2 (i) – “Ashoka the great was a true humanist”. Justify the statement by giving any two arguments.
Answer– “Ashoka the Great was a true humanist.” Two important arguments for the clarity of the statement –

1. Ashoka renounced violence after the Kalinga war and adopted the policy of 'Dhammavijaya', which included compassion and human values.

2. He appointed 'Dhamma Mahamatyas' for the welfare of the people and adopted equal
respect and religious tolerance towards all religions.
