"GRAMMER"

Q24. Fill in the blanks with appropriate preposition:

(i) Take turn              your left.

(ii) The cat is sleeping              the floor.

Answer -

(i) Take turn To your left.

Reason: The preposition "to" is used to indicate direction or movement toward a particular place.

ii) The cat is sleeping On the floor.

Reason: The preposition "on" indicates position, direction, or time. Here, it specifically shows that something is in contact with a surface.

Q25. Complete the following dialogue by filling in the blanks with suitable words:

Ansh: The Taj in full moon looks fabulous.

Akram: When     (i)        you visit the Taj?

Ansh: We     (ii)         there last week.

Answer -

Ansh: The Taj in full moon looks fabulous.

Akram: When did you visit the Taj?

Reason: The sentence is in the past tense because Akram is asking about a past event. In interrogative sentences with "did," the main verb remains in its base form.

Ansh: We went there last week.

Reason: The verb "go" changes to "went" in the simple past tense. Since Ansh is referring to a completed action ("last week"), "went" is the correct choice.

Q26. Change to reported speech :

(i) She says, "I am ready".

(ii) He said, "I will write a letter",

(iii) She said to me, "You are a clever boy".

Answer- (i) She says, "I am ready".

She said that she was ready

Reason: The present "am" is changed to the past "was" when reporting speech.

Answer- (ii) He said, "I will write a letter",

He said that he would write a letter.

Reason: The modal verb "will" is backshifted to "would" to indicate reported speech in the past.

Answer - (iii) She said to me, "You are a clever boy".

She told me that I was a clever boy

Reason: The direct address "you" changes to "I" in the reported speech, and "said to me" is replaced by "told me" for clarity.

Q27. Complete the following sentences with proper use of conjunction:

(i) Are you sure             you have the right address?

(ii) She lives              your aunt lived earlier.

(iii) Let us wait              the matter is decided.

(iv) She is more beautiful            her sister.

Answer(i) Are you sure That you have the right address?

Reason: It acts as a connector to introduce a new clause that provides further information about the main clause.

(ii) She lives Where your aunt lived earlier.

Reason: The conjunction "where" is used to indicate a place or location. It connects the main clause "She lives" with the subordinate clause "your aunt lived earlier," specifying the location.

(iii) Let us wait Until the matter is decided.

Reason: "Until" is a subordinating conjunction that expresses time. It indicates that we will wait up to the point when the matter is decided.

(iv) She is more beautiful Than her sister.

Reason: "Than" is a subordinating conjunction used in comparative sentences to show the difference between two people or things.

Q28. Complete the following passage by filling in the blanks using the correct  form of verbs given in brackets :

Arteries of the heart blocked by plaque            (could / can) reduce the flow of blood to the heart, possibly resulting in heart attack or death. Plaque           (are / is) actually a fat and cholesterol that accumulates on the inside of the arteries.

The arteries of the heart            (are / were) small and (can be/ can) blocked by such accumulations.

Answer -

Arteries of the heart blocked by plaque  can  reduce the flow of blood to the heart, possibly resulting in a heart attack or death. Plaque   is   actually a fat and cholesterol that accumulates on the inside of the arteries. The arteries of the heart  are  small and  can be  blocked by such accumulations.

Reason:

  • Can: The sentence is stating a general possibility or fact, so the present tense modal verb "can" is appropriate.
  • Is: "Plaque" is a singular noun, so the singular verb "is" is correct.
  • Are: The statement refers to a general fact about arteries, so the present tense "are" is appropriate.
  • Can be:  This phrase indicates a possibility in the present tense, which fits the context of the sentence.
