NIOS ENGLISH (202) Question Paper (Set - A)
SECTION – A
“READING”
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
My granddaughter Aadrita will soon reach an age when she would demand her share of grandparent's tales. How time seems to fly? About nine months ago, Aadrita delighted us with her arrival in the family. I think I did a reasonable job as a grandfather, with a self-composed lullaby in Nepali to soothe Aadrita when agitated, when she was with us for a month. I am sure it was by monotonous tone and the non-so-gentle rocking, rather than the affectionate lyrics, which compelled Aadrita to gape wonder struck at me, thereafter oblige by gently shutting her eyes. This would satisfy me in doing my bit in grandchild rearing, which I could not do in case sons as I was posted in forward areas or was too busy with my job.
Now, as far as storytelling to a child is concerned, how do I go about it? I think I should follow my grandpa's example my father, despite the many sterling qualities he possessed, could not tell a story to his grandchildren. He never even made an attempt. As far as my grandfather is concerned, I can distinctly recall him (a war veteran) reclining on a string cot, under a bright moon and Dressed in a white Kurta and lungi left calf majestically resting on his raised right knee, his right palm on the nape of his neck and (being left-handed , his left hand holding the pipe of a hookha. His silver-haired head and dark pink complexion glistering in the moonlight made him look awe-inspiring.
For me, telling a story to my grandchild under an open sky may not be possible as the current generation of parents are highly protective of their offspring and want to shelter them from cold, heat and dust. Therefore, it will be acceptable to all if I restrict my storytelling sessions to a room or lobby. Instead of a string cot, I would recline on our recently acquired spring sofa. For grandpa's hookah (smoking being injurious to the health of the baby and grandpa), I will hold a mug full of coffee in my right hand, leaving left hand free for popping snacks in my mouth. I should procure a small chair with a folding table in the front to ensure that Aadrita cannot run away when she becomes disinterested in my tale.
